Classic fake news with conspiracy theory elements was presented in court by one of the attorneys representing fugitive banker Tsvetan Vassilev – Konstantin Simeonov. The lawyer must have been truly devastated by the fact that the interminable farce of reading the entire indictment in the CorpBank case out loud, a ploy that the Bulgarian Madoff’s defence used to stall proceedings, was finally over and that now the case can actually be heard because he tried to shift the focus by creating a scandalous manipulation, connecting the name of lawmaker and Telegraph Media publisher Delyan Peevski and Vassilev’s absurd claim under the Global Magnitsky Act, on the one hand, to the government’s decision to negotiate the purchase of F-16 fighter planes, on the other.

Simeonov attempted to convince his audience that the acquisition of the aforementioned aircrafts was, you see, a deal intended to prevent punishment under the Magnitsky Act. This assertion does not hold water for several reasons.

First and foremost, the claim filed under the Magnitsky act is all smoke and mirrors. Vassilev and his people all but confirmed this last week when they decided to create another diversion tactic — this time using the RICO law. Second, the decision to buy F-16s, as US Ambassador to Sofia Eric Rubin has noted several times, is a sovereign decision of the country and was not made under duress. The choice itself was based on the fact that the F-16 is superior in characteristics to the aircraft in the competing offer.

However, the truth does not suit the fugitive banker’s attorney so he shamelessly lied that the F-16 decision was made in the interest of MP Delyan Peevski and tied that assertion to the Magnitsky Act trick.

Simeonov, who represents the fraudster Vassilev in court, is well aware that every argument should be supported by evidence. And since he has none, he resorts to blabbering, modeling his style after that of his client, who has tirelessly been spewing lies since 2017, saying that his enemies in Bulgaria will soon be punished. The fugitive banker would have the public believe that that would happen under the Magnitsky Act. But the illusion created by that trick gradually started to show cracks and now everyone sees it for what it is.

In his attempt to make the whole illusion thing work, Vassilev went as far as dragging the name of a US senator into his insinuations, although the US official has refuted his lies multiple times. Now, Vassilev is holding onto the parliamentary decision on the F-16s, which experts unanimously agree is the best for Bulgaria.

However preposterous this may sound, while he uses his attorney as a mouthpiece to spread lies, Tsvetan Vassilev knows that the chance of officials launching into explanations to disprove his latest fabrication is very slim. As always, the fraudster and his circle operate as a well-oiled machine for fake news. These fables have the lifespan of a fly but they help Vassilev’s servants keep busy and filibuster. Konstantin Simeonov has long specialised in this art and his remarks regularly create ammunition for the slandering machine composed of the Bulgarian oligarchs’ media outlets. He is a beloved “spokesperson” in the fake news items produced by Frognews, a website financed by Vassilev and owned by Ognyan Stefanov, aka agent Academician of the former State Security. The conspiracy theory narrated by Simeonov in the courtroom was immediately picked up by another cog in the Fake News Factory – actualno.com.

And so, instead of facing the court and taking personal responsibility for the collapse of the biggest financial pyramid of our time, Vassilev spins more and more clumsily patched-up lies with the help of his legion of mercenaries. Then they inundate the public consciousness with these via the media with the sole purpose of defaming enemy №1 of the Fake News Factory – Delyan Peevski. But no lie can fool people forever, so, sooner or later, the fugitive banker will face retribution and go to jail, where he can feel free to spin tall tales all he wants.
